Professor H.T. Thorat has joined as Director of National Institute of Technology, Uttarakhand on 1st Nov, 2011. Prior to his present assignment he was Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Visvesvarya National Institute of Technology, Nagpur.
Professor H.T. Thorat has graduated from VNIT, Nagpur,(then Visvesvaraya Regional College of Engineering) in 1978. He joined VNIT in 1982 after completion of Post Graduation from Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay in 1980. Professor H.T. Thorat obtained his Doctoral Degree from Nagpur University in 1991.
At VNIT, Nagpur, he has handled administrative responsibilities as Head of the Department, Dean(Academic), Chairman, Educational Technology & Library, Co-ordinator for NIT, Mizoram. He has worked on various expert committees of AICTE, Nagpur University, Technical Education Department of Govt. of Maharashtra.
Research interest of Professor H.T. Thorat is in the area of Machines, Automation, Robotics and Appropriate Technology. He has supervised research of 3 P.h.D., 1 ME(By Research) and 1 M.Arch.(By Research) candidates. At present 5 candidates are pursuing P.h.D. under his supervision.
Professor H.T. Thorat has a major contribution n Design & Development of Machines, Products and Technologies for local Industries. He is awarded "GS Parkhe" award by MCCI Pune for development of Machine. He is also honoured by Institute of Engineers by a Plaque in recognition of Eminence and Contribution to the field of Mechanical Engineering.
Professor H.T. Thorat has always given first priority to his responsibility as teacher. He has always used different techniques for teaching and evaluating students. He is a strong advocate of flexibility to students in terms of choice of courses, which suit to their own interests and future plans.
